Since my appointment to the board in September 2022, I’ve focused on returning stability, transparency, accountability, and trust to a beloved school district that’s been through a very rough time. 

Soon after joining the board, I advocated the appointment of new outside legal counsel to advise us on critical issues, and helped organize skilled outside support for dealing with complex personnel matters. 

As board president, I helped lead the comprehensive and successful search for a permanent Superintendent, Dr. Jim Shank, and also recruited Rhonda Ham to serve as interim Superintendent until Dr. Shank's term began in June.

I’ve passed legislation to initiate the relocation of our 65-year-old Pacific Beach Elementary to safe, higher ground nearby, and to support seismic safety at each of our school sites.

I helped build consensus across our staff, parents/guardians, administration, and board membership to have our district's 6th graders attend their elementary schools, starting this school year, to better foster their academic and social development.

In July 2023, the board adopted a lean, responsible operating budget for the 2023-24 school year based on conservative enrollment, revenue, and spending assumptions, which is already helping to improve the school district's financial position for a stronger future.
